Mr. Emergency Strikes Again
Well, he did it again. In Cooper’s first year with us, he is now up to THREE emergencies!
I remember a blog post my friend, Heather, put up a few months ago about her cat, Storm (aka “Lady Fluffington”), and her ordeal with a flea/tick preventative reaction. (click here to read her story) She mentioned in her post how she called a poison control hotline when Storm started going into convulsions.
I’m so glad I remembered her post, because on Christmas Eve we had to call them for Cooper.
While we were at Christmas Eve Mass, Cooper apparently got really upset with us for leaving, even though it was for barely two hours. Typcially when he gets upset, he takes his anger out on one corner of the kitchen wall where we have him gated (we have little teeth marks on the wall!). This time though, he decided to yank on the table cloth and pull the contents down.
We came home to find Cooper got into of a new tube of gasket sealer my husband bought and forgot on the table. He chewed right through the plastic packaging, and through the bottom of the tube. The sealer was oozing out, and we feared a reaction if he ingested any, even though nothing appeared to be on him or in his mouth.
I frantically called our local vet emergency clinics, and being it was late on Christmas Eve, got no answer. I pulled up the information for the ASPCA Poison Control hotline and gave them a call.
Even though Cooper had no reaction and was completely fine, the call to poison control was completely worth the $65 consultation fee to give me piece of mind and what to look for if he did ingest anything. I’m sure not many people know such a service exists for pets, and it’s nice to know it’s available 24/7. They were able to look up in their system the exact product Cooper got into, right down to the ounces, and told us what to expect in the given circumstance and what to do.
